To those unfamiliar with this art form, a lacquer painting boasts a glossy look on a black board of about an inch thick. Because this is an Asian art form, red and gold* are usually the preferred color for the background, but it can really be any color you choose. As for technique, the artist first outline in chalk on the black board. Then up to ten layers of colored lacquer followed by clear lacquer are applied with drying and polishing between each layer. After all layers are applied, the artist will polish different part of the painting until the desired colors shows. The lacquer painting used is made from the resin of the sumac/wax tree (Rhus succedanea), different from the one used for your regular furniture.
Our price stays relatively flat as the bigger the lacquer painting, the easier it is for us to render a high resemblance product.
To tailormade your product using a personal picture (to name a few: portraits, beautiful landscapes, family pets…), please upload your picture, select a size, and place your order. This painting is usually not framed as it is somewhat water resistant (you should still treat it as any work of art as it is not waterproof and can’t stand excessive light or humidity), you can choose to add a hook or a back stand to the black board to help with the display of the painting.
*24 carat gold leaves can be added for additional cost.
